Excerpt #1
“You don’t know that. You need to be prepared for anything.”
That had become the mantra over the past three days. Be prepared. Like she’d joined
the Boy Scouts without anyone telling her about it.
Prepare for any event. Have an attack ready. Strike as fast and as hard as she could. Fast
because speed was her best asset, and hard because she could only count on one opportunity.
She’d asked for his help. He’d reminded her of that over and over. After they’d had their
conversation the first day, when he’d explained his reservations about teaching her, he’d thrown
himself into her training like a man obsessed.
But not obsessed with her. In fact, since that conversation—after telling her that he
wanted more than friends, that he wanted her—he’d been true to his word. He’d been a
complete gentleman. He’d been respectful of her personal space, and he’d never spoken of it
again, as he’d promised. He’d even reined in his thoughts, for the most part.
His touch had stayed completely platonic, as if they were related or really good buddies.
And they’d touched a lot. In fact, they’d spent the last three days wrestling with each other. The
more they touched, the more she craved his arms around her.
It was maddening. She’d been the one to draw the line in the sand. Yet, she was the one
who wanted to stay in his arms. She was the one who inhaled too deeply when she was
pressed against his chest. She was the one who couldn’t stop staring at him.
In that time, she’d only caught something different in him one time. It had been two days
ago, the second full day of training. She closed her mind to him when they weren’t practicing,
but she needed to hear his thoughts when they were working out so she could learn how to use
her power to her advantage.
They’d fallen. He’d gone down on his butt then rolled onto his back, and she’d landed on
top of him. His hands had been on her waist. Their faces had been so close she could feel his
breath on her forehead. His brain had buzzed with wanting.
It had been an echo of what was coursing through her…the heat, the need to touch him.
They’d frozen like that until he gently but firmly moved her off of him and scrambled to
his feet. As he’d moved away from her, she’d see it.
Something like longing.
His jaw tightened, and his brows lowered. Then, it was gone from his mind, replaced by
his determination. Always his determination. He drove her on and on, teaching with more
patience than she’d ever seen in anyone, forcing whatever was happening between them to the
recesses of himself.
But in that moment, she’d wanted to reach for him. She’d had to stop herself from
crawling to him. She wanted to wrap her arms around him and place her lips on his perfect mouth.

Excerpt #2
As they loaded into the chopper, Nick’s eyes held hers, intense amidst the activity
around them. His message was obviously for her. Texted Blue and Seth, too. They’ll come for us. He kept repeating the words, as if he wasn’t sure she was listening. Or as if he was trying to reassure himself. She shook her head at him and looked away.
They hadn’t come before, and they wouldn’t come now. But she wasn’t going to ruin this
for him. It had been bad enough when her own hopes died. She’d let him hold on to his for awhile longer. If they were going to escape, they’d need to find their own way out. When they landed back at the complex, Dr. Fields and his orderly greeted them on the tarmac. As the changed soldiers ushered her and Nick off the helicopter, holding their hands behind their backs, they stopped in front of Fields. “Kitty, Kitty.” Dr. Fields shook his head, as if he was disappointed in her. “You should know better.” Then he waved a hand at the orderly next to them. Without a word, the man lifted
his gun and shot both her and Nick, in quick succession. As the tranquilizer took effect, she tried to catch one last glimpse of the sky. The sun was coming up, and it had been months since she’d seen it. But her eyes closed of their own volition, leaving her again in the darkness.

I give this book 5 stars. It had a great story, plot, and amazing characters that you will fall in love with. I could see myself rereading this book. The author did a great job on it. The author kept the story-line progressing wonderfully and where you were able to follow it. The way the author wrote the book you could imagine the story and see it unfold. I definitely recommend this story to anyone who loves action, adventure and romance. This story had a lot of action to it. I looked forward to reading more from this author. This series has been excellent and I look forward to more books from this author.

Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too, for letting me read this in exchange for my honest review.

Author Interview

1.Tell us a little about yourself? Perhaps something not many people know?

First of all, thank you so much for having me!!  I’m excited to be here.

I’m Marnee Blake. I’m an award-winning author and a 2016 finalist in the Romance Writer’s of America’s prestigious RITA® contest. I write fast-paced, action-packed YA and NA romantic thrillers. The Altered Series is a set of syfy romantic thrillers. The second book in the series, AVENGED, released from Entangled Embrace on June 27th.

Let’s see… I live in New Jersey, and I have two little boys.  Something that not many people know?  I don’t like raisins. Icky. I think they’re sad, shriveled versions of themselves with a weird texture.

  1. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Interesting quirk… Well, those who know me would probably say that it’s hard to pick only one quirk. LOL!  But, as for writing quirks, I don’t write anywhere specific.  I’ve written on the couch, at the table, and on top of the dryer (where they kids don’t follow me). I write wherever people will allow me a few minutes of peace and there’s a flat surface to put my computer.

  1. How did you come up with the Altered series?

There were a couple of things. First, I read an article (which led to many other articles) about a very well-known private security company that has done mercenary work throughout the world. They appeared to work outside the law, even closing and reopening under different names. It felt so clandestine to me. And I’ve always been equal parts fascinated and terrified by how far science, technology, and medicine go, walking ethical lines.  The series was born from those two things.

  1. How long does it take you to write a book? How long did it take on Avenged?

It all depends on the book!  And, well, it depends on what’s going on in my life, too.  It took me about 9 months to write ALTERED and another 3 months to edit and revise it.  AVENGED?  I already knew what was going to happen and I’d already created the world. I wrote it over 2 months. I feel like that one kind of fell out.

  1. What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

I have two little boys and an incredibly supportive husband. When I’m not writing, I hang out with them. As for non-writing interests?  I’m a reader (this is probably not a surprise). I also like to crochet and knit, and I bake. Cookies are a family favorite.

  1. Which writers inspire you?

Nora Roberts inspires me. She writes wonderfully in a number of sub-genres, and she’s consistently prolific. Plus, she’s an incredibly nice lady who gives back to the romance community constantly. I aspire to be her when I grow up.

  1. If you could spend time a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

I would love to hang out with Blue. She was the heroine of ALTERED, and she’s a trip. She says what she thinks. Blue likes to help people, so I could see us volunteering somewhere. She’d probably be taking over the operation before the day was done.

  1. What are you working on at the moment?

I’m currently trying my hand at a young adult story. Writing YA is different than romance, though. It’s been a learning experience.

  1. What is your favorite motivational phrase?

“Just Keep Swimming!” from the very motivational Dory from the Finding Nemo movies.  It reminds me that the key is to just keep going forward.  There will be ups and downs on the path, but staying where you are doesn’t get you closer to your dreams.

  1. Is there anything particularly challenging in your writing?

Challenging? I think writing is challenging. LOL!  My biggest challenge about being a writer is balancing my life with my job.  I’m a work at home mom, and until now, I had little kids at home while I was doing it. Come the fall, everyone will be gone all day and I’ll have more “normal” work hours. But, that’s never been the case before now.

  1. What is your favorite part of avenged?

SPOILER.  My favorite part of AVENGED is when Nick and Kitty escape from the compound.  Writing that escape scene was a lot of fun, and I think it highlights both of their strengths.

  1. How much research do you do on your book?

That definitely depends on the book!  Some books require more research than others. I love and hate research. I usually end up falling down the rabbit hole, finding all sorts of new information.  While I like to learn new things, it’s hard to think, “It’ll only take a minute to look this up” and then look up an hour later and realize that you’ve lost time you should be putting up words!

  1. What advice would you give to aspiring writer?

Oh wow.  Let’s see. My biggest advice: Listen. Listen to others who are further in their journey than you. Listen to the advice of industry professionals. Listen to the praise, but really listen to the criticism. All of it will teach you the things that will help you as you go forward.  And hang on!  It’s a wild ride.

undercover princessThis was excellent to read. It stayed to the story and it made you want to keep reading it .. Once I started to read it I had a hard time putting it down. I really enjoyed the characters and the story flows. I really enjoyed how the author included the history of the characters and made it more interesting to learn. I would recommend this to anyone who loves romance. There was plenty of adventure in it and romance. There was also twist that you wouldn’t of expected. The twist definitely made it more interesting. This author did a fantastic job on this book.
